Nikon Z6 Review
Why this camera
The Nikon Z6 (mark 1) remains one of the best-balanced cameras in Nikon’s lineup. It offers full-frame quality without excess bulk, and it has proven reliable across travel, portraits, and low-light scenes. For me, it’s a camera I love to pick up. I use a FTZ adapter to use my old (DSLR) lenses.
Setup and build
Setup is straightforward with an intuitive menu system that mirrors Nikon DSLRs. The magnesium alloy body is weather-sealed and feels professional in hand. At about 675 g body-only, it balances well with both compact primes and heavier zooms. This camera (to me) feels so good in my hands. The ergonomics are superb! I prefer it over Sony Alpha cameras by a lot.
Image and video quality
The 24.5 MP BSI sensor delivers sharp, clean images with excellent dynamic range. High ISO shots remain usable far beyond ISO 6400 however I prefer 3200 max to avoid noise. I’m not much of a videographer, so I can’t review the video functionality.
Handling and performance
The 5-axis in-body stabilization gives a real edge in handheld shooting. Autofocus is quick and accurate, with face and eye detection that performs consistently. The EVF is large and bright, making composition easy even in difficult light. I really don’t miss anything compared to more modern cameras. I tried Z6 III, current Sony models and the like.
Verdict
The Nikon Z6 may be the first generation, but it set a high bar. It combines superb image quality, modern stabilization, and robust handling in a body that remains competitive years later. If you’re like me and are just shooting for fun, the original Z6 is great for getting into mirrorless Nikon. For my use, it’s a clear 5/5.
Recommendation
If you want a full-frame camera that covers nearly all bases at a fair price, the Z6 is still an excellent choice. I found my Z6 used and with warranty at my local camera shop. I’d recommend to do that. If you want the current model, see the purchase section.
